Sea Kayaking!

Image
As part of our OLD School semester, we kayaked for a week in the waters surrounding Everglades National Park. This is always a highlight due to the warm weather (70 degrees in November!) and natural beauty of the area. This semester was no different. We had a great time; it was a welcome change of pace after caving in Alabama. The majority of the time the weather was great; sunny, few clouds, and manageable wind. One day my pod (group of kayakers) crossed a long section of open water. Shortly after we started, the wind picked up and the waves became fairly choppy. We put our heads down and continued, facing the waves and wind. Worse yet, the current had recently changed and worked against us. The situation was not looking promising. Our pod's skill level was fairly high. We didn’t have any professional kayakers, but most of them could hold their own. There was one weak link in our pod; a female student I’ll call Wilma. Wilma was a weak paddler. This problem was compo...

Emiliano & Me

Image
From December 3 to December 10, a team from Snowbird Wilderness Outfitters went to Orphanage Emmanuel in Guaimaca, Honduras. I wanted to share pictures with you. I didn't take many. What you'll see is that I took most of the pictures with my sponsor child, Emiliano Noe. For $35, you can sponsor a child too! Atlanta Airport. Excuse my eyes, I had stayed up all night. Noe devoured his cookies He needed a cup for his "fresca". Smile, Noe! Cheese! I mean, queso! How most days went. I was the human jungle gym. Thumbs up for everybody who supported! God Bless, Jeremy

Walk to the Cross

Image
Hello! I was given the awesome opportunity to act in my church's Good Friday "Walk to the Cross". I was approached at Clayhouse Alliance Church by some elders to see if I was interested in being a part of the production as the repentant sinner. I had some doubts as I'm a TERRIBLE  actor, but it was only a handful of lines. The main challenge, they told me, was physical as we sinners would be in a towel right at nightfall. I agreed and didn't think about it much until the day before. At this point in my life, I did not have a vehicle. My truck's transmission gave out and I was still car shopping. I used the city bus, but it did not run that late nor did it run that far out of town. A friend picked me up (ask me about the story!) and I got there a couple minutes late. When I walked in, I was greeted with a surprise. "You're going to play Jesus", Pastor Danny told me. Being as I had a beard, I was assigned the role. I immediately thought of th...

The Humanity of the Dark Knight

Image
Growing up, I loved superheroes. As a preschooler I loved the Power Rangers . Advancing in years, I became a fan of Superman, Captain America, The Flash, and both the Justice League and the Avengers. They were strong, powerful, courageous, and always seemed to do the right thing at the right time. While I my favorite superhero will always be Captain America (for his unwavering commitment to 'Merica ) I always felt a close connection to the man in black, the caped crusader, the Dark Knight: Batman. Looking back at it, I always connected with Batman because I could (very unrealistically) become Batman. Superman was from another planet, Captain America was injected with a special serum, the X-Men were mutants (and Wolverine became stronger with adamantium), and the list goes on. Side Note: A similar case can be made for Iron Man. Iron Man was gifted with incredible intuition and intelligence by his father, Howard Stark. All Batman inherited was a cool house and some neat  toys...

Days of Future Past – An Allegory for the Christian Faith?

Image
Movie Poster for X-Men: Days of Future Past I love the X-Men series. I saw the newest movie, Days of Future Past, twice in theaters. While watching the movie for the second time, I began a working theory: that the young 1970's Charles Xavier is a young man who is close to dedicating his life to Christ. In this way, the events of the movie are an allegory for the trials and sufferings of a newfound Christian. Allow me to further explain. I don’t have the time to relay the whole plot but I will explain pertinent events as they happen. In the beginning of the movie, present-day Xavier forms a plan to alter the current mutant massacre by changing the past. With the course of events changed, the subsequent years would turn out differently and result in a brighter future. By default, Wolverine must be the mutant who travels back in time (because of his healing factor). Wolverine’s goal is to unite the 1970’s incarnations of Xavier and Magneto to stop the assassination of Bo...

Life Lessons... at Hooters?!

“Like father, like son” is how the saying goes. If you truly know me, you know that the saying has a very direct application in my life. From our physical characteristics to our genotype, I am a lot like my father. One specific way that I am like my father is with finances. We both believe in the “less is more” strategy. We like to conserve money wherever possible – wearing more layers to keep the heat off in the winter, frequenting yard sales and the local Good Will, and buying food in bulk are several examples. In fact, last year I had my heating bill well under $30 for several months during the winter months. Being conservative with my money has led me to apply to several restaurant email clubs. A perk to joining these clubs is that they usually send you free food around your birthday. Seeing as last week was my birthday, I received several great offers. I have already been to Black Bear Diner (a local place here in the Springs) for free pancakes, Ruby Tuesday for a free burger...
